INTRODUCTION

The Master of Science in Microbiology & Immunology is a flexible program of study designed to help students achieve their individual educational goals and career objectives. The proximity of the Department to the National Institutes of Health and other organizations provide our students a unique learning environment with rarely available insights into the national response to the emerging problems of infectious diseases. A broad range of course offerings from within the department and university allows the students to gain or enhance their background in microbiology, immunology, and various aspects of modern molecular genetics. Laboratory experience in specialized techniques is also available. The program is intended to enhance career advancement in teaching and industry or prepare a student for a career in research.

In the public sector, opportunities are available in public health departments, research and teaching institutes, international organizations such as NIH and WHO, and public sector hospitals. In the private sector, graduates can work in private health care facilities and health care centers. They can also pursue careers in foreign countries including the Middle East, Europe, USA, and Canada in public health departments and health care facilities.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

After completion of this program, the postgraduate will be able to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the basic and advance Microbiology and Immunology, both in their fundamental context and in their application to the discipline, and will understand, correlate and apply theoretical foundations of knowledge to practice while evaluating new or evolving theories. They will develop and utilize critical thinking and inquiry to improve practices in Microbiology and Immunology for health care delivery and consider research-based evidences in medical sciences practice. Graduates will communicate effectively through verbal and descriptive writing and demonstrate leadership, management, and teamwork skills to participate effectively in the health care team. They will gain the trust of society through their practices, understand professional and ethical responsibilities, and engage in lifelong learning and growth in the field. Furthermore, they will think critically, promote teamwork, and demonstrate professional attitude while performing specimen collection, conducting experiments, and carrying out data analysis and interpretation to draw valid conclusions. They will also engage in reflective practices and sound decision making, understand principles and procedures of various assays and tests theoretically, and demonstrate techniques used in diagnostic and research laboratories.
